Take A Stand: Keep the USDA's Organic Standards Intact
Feb 24, 2003

As you may have heard in the news recently, a section of the Omnibus Appropriations Bill threatens to weaken the integrity of the National Organic Program, for which Walnut Acres and organic consumers have worked hard to put in place.

Walnut Acres and the Organic Trade Association are urging as many people as possible to contact their legislators and ask them to co-sponsor two new bills to correct this. The new bills are scheduled to be introduced on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 by Senator Leahy (D-VT) and Representative Farr (D-CA).

Typically, when a bill is introduced on the floor of the Senate or the House, it has a higher chance of passing successfully when there is a broad range of support expressed. One way to express this support is to have as many co-sponsors listed on the bill before it even gets assigned to committees.

RIGHT NOW, before the close of business Tuesday 2/25, we need your help in putting pressure on some key states for getting bi-partisan support for the bill that, if passed, will repeal Section 771 from the Omnibus Appropriations Bill.

Please call and/or send an e-mail to your Senators and Legislators by following these simple instructions:

1. Follow the link below to identify & get contact info for your Senators
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

Call &/or e-mail yours:
"My name is ____ and I live in ____ I work for ____ and I urge Senator ____ to co-sponsor Senator Leahy's bill to repeal 771 from the Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The language will completely undercut decades of hard work by the organic industry to put meaning behind the organic claim. Repealing this language now is smart for business. To co-sponsor this legislation, contact Ben Huebner 202-224-5239."

2. Follow the link below to identify & get contact info for you Representative in the House
http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.html

Call &/or e-mail yours:
"My name is ____ and I live in ____ I work for ____ and I urge Congressman/Congresswoman ____ to co-sponsor Congressman Farr's bill to repeal 771 from the Omnibus Appropriations Bill. The language will completely undercut decades of hard work by the organic industry to put meaning behind the organic claim. Repealing this language now is smart for business. To co-sponsor this legislation, contact Troy Phillips 202-225-2861."

This will take 5-7 minutes of your time and will carry quite a bit of weight when these Members of Congress consider co-sponsoring OR when they hear this bill introduced on the floor.
